Applying as a dentist: CV and covering letter

Een goed tandarts-CV en een sterke motivatiebrief zijn belangrijk. Besteed hier genoeg tijd aan. Focus vooral op relevante werkervaring en nevenactiviteiten, en laat bijrollen weg.

Eerst lees je over het CV, daarna over de motivatiebrief, en daarna vind je blanco CV-sjablonen.

1. Het CV

Een tandarts-CV bevat je persoonlijke gegevens en volgende drie onderdelen: je professionele ervaring, je opleiding en je vaardigheden.

1.1 Professionele ervaring

De professionele of werkervaring houdt hier je klinische ervaring in, zoals je stage in de tandartspraktijk of je werk bij een kaakchirurg. 

Beschrijf je ervaringen in verschillende praktijken of ziekenhuizen. Als je een specialisatie hebt, zoals chirurgische tandheelkunde, endodontie of orthodontie, geef dit dan duidelijk aan. Bijvoorbeeld:

  • Chirurgie van de mond en kaak
  • Endodontie (wortelkanaalbehandelingen)
  • Orthodontie
  • Tandheelkunde voor kinderen
  • Parodontologie (tandvleesbehandelingen)
  • Mondgeneeskunde
  • Angsttandarts

1.2 Opleiding

Vermeld je diploma, bijvoorbeeld het Diploma Staatsexamen Tandheelkunde, de universiteit waar je hebt gestudeerd, het aantal jaren van je opleiding en eventuele speciale vermelding of prijzen die je hebt ontvangen.

1.3 Vaardigheden

Let goed op de vereisten in de vacature en koppel je vaardigheden eraan. Verdeel je vaardigheden in twee groepen:

  • Technische vaardigheden: Kaakchirurgie, orthodontie, implantologie, endodontie, tandheelkundige radiologie, protheses, mondchirurgie, pedodontologie, parodontologie.
  • Interpersoonlijke vaardigheden: Empathie, geduld, pedagogie, teamspirit, organisatie.
     

2. De Motivatiebrief

2.1 Jij-fase: Waarom dit bedrijf?

Vertel waarom je graag bij deze tandartspraktijk of bedrijf wilt werken. 

  • Bijvoorbeeld de goede sfeer, interessante specialisaties of het team.
    Laat zien dat je de functie en de organisatie goed begrijpt.

2.2 Ik-fase: Jouw ervaring en specialiteiten

Beschrijf je ervaringen, vaardigheden en specialiteiten. Benoem prestaties waar je trots op bent, zoals een succesvol afgerond project of een afgeronde behandeling.

  • Geef ook informatie over je vorige functies en je ontwikkeling daarin.
  • Focus op relevante werkervaring en nevenactiviteiten.
  • Laat functies die niet relevant zijn (bijrollen) weg, want die maken je brief onduidelijk.
  • Kijk naar veranderende verantwoordelijkheden, teamgrootte en projecten in de vacature.

Vertel concreet wat je tot nu toe hebt gedaan en waar je verantwoordelijk voor was. Laat duidelijk zien waar jouw specialiteit ligt.

2.3 Wij-fase: Jij en het bedrijf samen

Leg uit waarom jij en het bedrijf goed bij elkaar passen.

  • Bijvoorbeeld hoe jouw vaardigheden en ervaring het team versterken.
    Leg alles eenvoudig uit, zoals je het aan een buurman zou vertellen.

A good dentist CV and a strong motivation letter are important. Spend enough time on this. Focus especially on relevant work experience and extracurricular activities, and leave out minor roles.

1. The CV

A dentist CV contains your personal information and the following three sections: your professional experience, your education and your skills.

1.1 Professional experience

Professional or work experience here includes your clinical experience, such as your internship in a dental practice or your work with an oral surgeon. 

Describe your experiences in different practices or hospitals. If you have a specialisation, such as surgical dentistry, endodontics or orthodontics, clearly indicate this. For example:

  • Surgery of the mouth and jaw
  • Endodontics (root canal treatments)
  • Orthodontics
  • Pediatric dentistry
  • Periodontology (gum treatments)
  • Oral medicine
  • Dentist for anxious patients

1.2 Education

Mention your degree, for example the Diploma Staatsexamen Tandheelkunde, the university where you studied, the number of years of your education and any special distinctions or awards you have received.

1.3 Skills

Pay close attention to the requirements in the job vacancy and link your skills to these. Divide your skills into two groups:

  • Technical skills: Oral surgery, orthodontics, implantology, endodontics, dental radiology, prostheses, oral surgery, pedodontics, periodontology.
  • Interpersonal skills: Empathy, patience, pedagogy, team spirit, organisation.
     

2. The Motivation Letter

2.1 You-phase: Why this company?

Explain why you would like to work at this dental practice or company. 

  • For example, the good atmosphere, interesting specialisations or the team.
    Show that you understand the position and the organisation well.

2.2 I-phase: Your experience and specialties

Describe your experience, skills and specialties. Mention achievements you are proud of, such as a successfully completed project or treatment.

  • Also give information about your previous positions and your development in them.
  • Focus on relevant work experience and extracurricular activities.
  • Leave out positions that are not relevant (minor roles), as these make your letter unclear.
  • Look at changing responsibilities, team size and projects in the vacancy.

Tell concretely what you have done so far and what you were responsible for. Clearly show where your speciality lies.

2.3 We-phase: You and the company together

Explain why you and the company are a good match.

  • For example, how your skills and experience strengthen the team.
    Explain everything simply, as you would to a neighbour.
