Vincent van Gogh wordt geboren in 1853.

Zijn broer Theo zegt: “Je moet iets met kunst doen.”
Daarom gaat Vincent naar een kunstschool in Brussel.

Na Brussel woont Vincent in veel andere plaatsen.
Hij gaat naar Brabant, Den Haag, Drenthe, Nuenen en Antwerpen.
Maar hij voelt zich nergens echt thuis.
Hij is vaak verdrietig en alleen.

Vincent verdient geen geld met zijn kunst.
Theo helpt hem en stuurt hem soms geld.

Later verhuist Vincent naar Parijs.
Daar leert hij moderne kunstenaars kennen.
Zijn stijl verandert.
Hij gebruikt lichtere kleuren en schildert met korte penseelstreken.

Daarna gaat Vincent naar Arles, in het zuiden van Frankrijk.
Hij schildert daar vijf versies van zonnebloemen.
Maar het eerste schilderij verkoopt hij niet.

Vincent heeft het moeilijk.
Hij wordt ziek in zijn hoofd.
Op een dag snijdt hij een stuk van zijn oor af.
Daarna maakt hij een zelfportret met een verband om zijn hoofd.

Hij laat zich opnemen in een kliniek.
Daar schildert hij veel, soms met veel energie.
Maar hij is ook vaak in de war.
Soms eet hij zelfs zijn eigen verf.

Als Vincent 37 jaar is, wordt het leven te zwaar.
Hij sterft.

Pas na zijn dood wordt zijn werk beroemd.
Veel mensen vinden zijn schilderijen mooi.
Hij krijgt eindelijk waardering – maar eerst kwam die alleen van zijn broer Theo.

He paints five versions of sunflowers there.
But he does not sell the first painting.

Vincent has a hard time.
He becomes ill in his mind.
One day he cuts off a piece of his ear.
After that, he makes a self-portrait with a bandage around his head.

He admits himself to a clinic.
There he paints a lot, sometimes with great energy.
But he is also often confused.
Sometimes he even eats his own paint.

When Vincent is 37 years old, life becomes too hard.
He dies.

Only after his death does his work become famous.
Many people find his paintings beautiful.
He finally receives appreciation – but at first, that came only from his brother Theo.
