Understanding Demonstrative Adjectives in French: Ce, Cet, Cette, Ces

In this lesson, you will learn how to use French demonstrative adjectives to specify and point out particular nouns clearly. These adjectives help you indicate "this," "that," or "these" in different contexts.

The Four Demonstrative Adjectives

  • Ce: Used before masculine singular nouns starting with a consonant or an aspirated 'h'. Example: ce soir (this evening).
  • Cet: Used before masculine singular nouns starting with a vowel or a mute 'h'. Example: cet homme (this man), cet ami (this friend).
  • Cette: Used before feminine singular nouns. Example: cette journée (this day).
  • Ces: Used before all plural nouns, masculine or feminine. Example: ces hommes (these men), ces femmes (these women).

Usage Highlights

Remember that the choice between ce and cet depends on the sound that begins the noun following the adjective. This helps maintain the flow of speech and clarity.

Demonstrative adjectives come directly before the noun they describe and must agree in gender and number with that noun.

Helpful Comparison with English

Unlike English, where “this” or “that” does not change form, French demonstrative adjectives change depending on gender and number. English does not differentiate between vowels and consonants for these words, but French does with ce and cet.

Some useful phrases to remember are:

  • Ce livre – This book (masculine, consonant start)
  • Cet examen – This exam (masculine, vowel start)
  • Cette maison – This house (feminine)
  • Ces chaussures – These shoes (plural)

This lesson is designed for A1 learners and gives you practical examples and explanations that will help you confidently use French demonstrative adjectives in everyday conversations and writing.
