Learn Italian cardinal numbers with a focus on the tens (10, 20, 30, etc.). This lesson explains how to form numbers from 21 to 99 by combining tens and units, highlighting the rule of dropping the final vowel of the tens before 'uno' and 'otto'. Includes examples and useful notes to understand Italian number formation naturally and correctly.
  1. Numbers from 21 to 99 are formed with decina + numero.
  2. Remove the final vowel of the ten with uno and otto.

Cardinal Numbers: The Tens

This lesson introduces the cardinal numbers in Italian, focusing on the tens: 10 (dieci), 20 (venti), 30 (trenta), and so on up to 90 (novanta). These numbers are fundamental when forming quantities from 10 to 99.

Forming Numbers Between 21 and 99

Numbers between 21 and 99 are created by combining the tens and the units. For example, 21 is "ventuno" (20 + 1), and 35 is "trentacinque" (30 + 5). Notice that the final vowel of the tens is dropped when followed by the units "uno" or "otto", such as in "ventuno" or "ventotto".

Examples of Tens and Their Combinations

  • Dieci (10), example: sedici (16)
  • Venti (20), example: ventuno (21)
  • Trenta (30), example: trentacinque (35)
  • Quaranta (40), example: quarantotto (48)
  • Cinquanta (50), example: cinquantanove (59)
  • Sessanta (60), example: sessantatre (63)
  • Settanta (70), example: settantasetta (77)
  • Ottanta (80), example: ottantadue (82)
  • Novanta (90), example: novantasei (96)

Additionally, the phrase "una dozzina" means "a dozen" (12), as in "una dozzina di uova" (a dozen eggs).

Important Notes on Usage

Italian uses a simple additive system for these numbers, but remember to drop the final vowel of the tens when followed by "uno" or "otto" to sound natural and correct.

Differences and Useful Phrases

Unlike English where "twenty-one" separates the tens and units with a hyphen, Italian combines them smoothly, sometimes altering vowels for ease of pronunciation. For instance, "venti" plus "uno" becomes "ventuno" (not "ventiuno"). Also, Italian gender can slightly affect numbers when feminine nouns are involved, but for cardinal numbers, this lesson focuses on the masculine or neutral form.

Useful Italian numbers to remember:

  • Dieci - Ten
  • Venti - Twenty
  • Trenta - Thirty
  • Quaranta - Forty
  • Una dozzina - A dozen
