Lesson Content Highlights

The lesson explains how to communicate effectively in a pharmacy setting, including how to explain ailments such as cold, fever, or allergies. It also covers polite ways to ask for advice or recommendations and how to understand instructions related to medicine dosage and usage.

Grammar and Usage Notes

Bulgarian uses the definite article as a suffix (e.g., лекарството – the medicine), which is different from English where articles precede nouns. Question formation often involves intonation and question words that may differ in placement.

Differences Between English and Bulgarian in a Pharmacy Context

In Bulgarian, gender and number agreement are very important, especially with adjectives describing symptoms or medicine types. For example, болен for a male patient means 'sick,' and болна for a female. Also, Bulgarian verbs often include personal endings that indicate the subject, which can sometimes allow omitting the pronoun.

Useful Bulgarian Phrases for Pharmacy Visits

  • Може ли да ми препоръчате нещо за кашлица? (Can you recommend something for a cough?)
  • Как се приема това лекарство? (How is this medicine taken?)
  • Имате ли нещо без рецепта? (Do you have anything without a prescription?)
  • От колко време имате тези симптоми? (How long have you had these symptoms?)
