Introduction to Dutch Question Words: Wie, Wat, and Welk(e)

In this lesson, you will learn how to use three essential Dutch question words: wie, wat, and welk(e). Understanding these words helps you ask about people, things, and specific nouns, which is key at the beginner A1 level.

Question Words and Their Uses

  • Wie: Used to ask about people. For example, Wie werkt als dokter? means "Who works as a doctor?"
  • Wat: Used for animals and things or asking about categories. For example, Wat is je favoriete studie? means "What is your favorite study?"
  • Welk(e): Used with nouns to ask "which" or "what kind of." You choose between welk and welke depending on the gender and number of the noun. For example, Welk cadeau wil je? means "Which gift do you want?"

Important Grammar Points

Welk is used with het-words (neuter nouns), while welke is for de-words (common gender nouns) and plurals. This distinction is important for choosing the correct form.

Comparison with English

Unlike English, where “who,” “what,” and “which” are mostly clear, Dutch requires attention to noun gender and number with question words. For example, English uses “which” for both singular and plural, but Dutch splits it into welk and welke. Also, wie strictly refers to people, similar to “who,” while wat covers both animals and objects, similar to “what.”

Useful Phrases

  • Wie is jouw collega op kantoor? – Who is your colleague at the office?
  • Wat doe je graag in je vrije tijd? – What do you like to do in your free time?
  • Welk beroep wil je later kiezen? – Which profession do you want to choose later?
  • Welke studie past bij jou? – Which study suits you?

This lesson prepares you to form clear questions and improves your basic conversational skills in Dutch. Practicing these words will help you ask for information about people, things, and choices effectively.
