Learn About Seasons, Months, and Parts of the Year in French
This lesson introduces essential vocabulary and grammar related to the seasons, months, and parts of the year in French. You will learn how to describe weather and activities typical of each season, such as spring's mild weather or the cold and snowy winter. Key seasonal words include l'hiver (winter), le printemps (spring), l'été (summer), and l'automne (autumn).
Months of the Year
You'll also get familiar with important months like janvier (January), avril (April), octobre (October), and décembre (December). These months are linked to different weather patterns and cultural activities, such as holidays or vacations.
Using Adjectives with Seasons
The lesson covers adjective agreement (l'accord des adjectifs) when describing the seasons and weather. For example, you will practice saying "une saison froide" (a cold season) while ensuring adjectives match the gender and number of the nouns.
Practicing Speaking and Planning
Through dialogues and role-play, you will improve your ability to discuss the seasons and weather, ask and answer questions like "Quel temps fait-il en hiver ?" (What is the weather like in winter?), and plan activities according to the time of year.
Verb Conjugation Focus
To support speaking, you will work on present tense verb conjugations with verbs such as préférer (to prefer) and aller (to go), integrated into relevant sentences about seasons and months.
Summary
- Season and month names in French
- Describing weather and seasonal activities
- Correct adjective agreement with seasons
- Common phrases for discussing weather and preferences
- Present tense verb conjugations for practical communication
This lesson is tailored for beginners (A1 level) and offers a comprehensive introduction to seasonal vocabulary with practical conversation and grammar work designed for contextual learning.
Useful Notes About French vs English
Unlike English, in French, adjectives usually agree in gender and number with the noun they describe. For example, "une saison froide" (a cold season) uses the feminine form froide because saison is feminine. Also, French season names are generally not capitalized (l'hiver, not L'Hiver), which is different from English.
Common useful phrases include:
Quel temps fait-il ? — "What is the weather like?"
J'aime l'été parce qu'il fait chaud. — "I like summer because it is warm."
En hiver, il neige souvent. — "In winter, it often snows."
