Cardinal Numbers: The Tens

This lesson covers the formation and use of Italian cardinal numbers in the tens, from 10 to 90, and how to combine them with units to form numbers up to 99. Understanding these numbers is crucial for everyday communication, shopping, telling age, dates, and more.

Numbers in the Tens

Italian tens are simple base numbers like dieci (10), venti (20), trenta (30), up to novanta (90). These form the foundation for all numbers between 10 and 99.

Combining Tens and Units

Numbers from 21 to 99 are made by adding a unit number to the ten. For example:

  • sedici (16) combines dieci + sei
  • ventuno (21) combines venti + uno, with a slight spelling change

A key rule: when combining, the vowel at the end of the tens number (like the "i" in venti or "a" in trenta) is dropped if the number that follows starts with "uno" or "otto." For example:

  • ventuno (21) instead of *ventiuno*
  • trentotto (38) instead of *trentaotto*

Special Expressions

The phrase "una dozzina" means "a dozen" (12), which is useful when counting items like eggs: una dozzina di uova.

Important Differences from English

In English, tens and units are usually separated by a hyphen or space (e.g., twenty-one), while in Italian, they are written as one word with vowel elision in specific cases. Also, Italian cardinal numbers have consistent pronunciation rules without silent letters, which differ from English.

Useful Vocabulary

  • dieci – ten
  • venti – twenty
  • trenta – thirty
  • quaranta – forty
  • cinquanta – fifty
  • sessanta – sixty
  • settanta – seventy
  • ottanta – eighty
  • novanta – ninety
  • una dozzina – a dozen

Practice combining tens with units to master pronunciation and spelling, focusing on the important rule of vowel omission before "uno" and "otto."
