Differences Between English and Italian in This Context

When discussing media, some Italian terms have direct English equivalents, but cultural nuances affect usage. For example:

  • Podcast is used in both languages, but in Italian it is often pronounced podkàst and can be masculine: il podcast.
  • Radio in English usually refers to the device or medium; in Italian, la radio is feminine and can also mean the radio station or the broadcast itself.
  • The verb ascoltare (to listen) often requires the preposition a before the object (e.g., ascoltare la radio), a construction not used in English.

Some useful expressions to remember:

  • mettere su la radio – to turn on the radio
  • scaricare un podcast – to download a podcast
  • seguirlo regolarmente – to follow it regularly (referring to a series or program)
