B1.11 - Going to the cinema

Claire, collègue: Show On a enfin fini cette réunion… ça te dirait d’aller voir un film ce soir au cinéma de Montparnasse ?

(We finally finished that meeting… would you like to go see a movie tonight at the Montparnasse cinema?)

Julien, collègue: Show Oui, bonne idée, j’ai besoin de décompresser ; tu as regardé les séances ? Qu’est-ce qui passe en ce moment ?

(Yes, good idea — I need to unwind. Did you check the showtimes? What's playing right now?)

Claire, collègue: Show Il y a un thriller français qui vient de sortir en salles, la bande-annonce avait l’air pas mal, mais la durée est de deux heures et quart, ça fait un peu long après le boulot.

(There's a French thriller that just opened; the trailer looked pretty good, but it's two hours and fifteen minutes long — a bit long after work.)

Julien, collègue: Show Deux heures et quart, c’est beaucoup, surtout si on se lève tôt demain ; sinon il y a une comédie américaine en version originale sous-titrée, avec une bonne critique et un acteur que j’aime bien dans le rôle principal.

(Two hours and fifteen is a lot, especially if we have to get up early tomorrow. Otherwise there's an American comedy in the original version with subtitles, it has good reviews and an actor I like in the lead.)

Claire, collègue: Show La comédie me tente bien, en plus la salle est plus grande et plus confortable ; tu peux réserver deux places pour la séance de 20h30 ?

(The comedy sounds good, and the auditorium is bigger and more comfortable. Can you book two tickets for the 8:30 pm showing?)

Julien, collègue: Show Oui, je prends nos places en ligne tout de suite, comme ça on évite la file d’attente ; on se retrouve directement devant le cinéma vers 20h ?

(Yes, I'll buy our tickets online right away so we avoid the line. Shall we meet in front of the cinema around 8 pm?)

Claire, collègue: Show Parfait, comme ça j’ai le temps de passer chez moi avant ; envoie-moi juste la confirmation de réservation au cas où il y aurait un problème.

(Perfect — that gives me time to stop by my place first. Just send me the booking confirmation in case there's a problem.)

Julien, collègue: Show Ça marche, si jamais la séance est annulée, on regardera un film en streaming chez moi, mais j’espère que le scénario sera bon, j’ai vraiment envie d’une histoire qui change un peu.

(Will do. If the screening is canceled we'll stream a movie at my place, but I hope the script is good — I really want a story that's a bit different.)

Nadia, amie: Show Oui, globalement oui ; l’intrigue n’était pas très originale, mais le réalisateur a réussi à créer des scènes vraiment fortes, surtout vers la fin.

(Yes, overall I did. The plot wasn't very original, but the director created some really powerful scenes, especially toward the end.)

Marc, ami: Show J’ai trouvé le personnage principal super crédible, par contre certains rôles secondaires étaient un peu caricaturaux, tu ne trouves pas ?

(I found the main character very believable, but some supporting roles were a bit caricatured. Don't you think?)

Nadia, amie: Show C’est vrai, mais ça ne m’a pas trop gênée ; le scénario tenait bien, on comprenait vite le synopsis : un avocat qui découvre que son client lui ment depuis le début, et tout bascule.

(That's true, but it didn't bother me much. The script held together well; you quickly understood the premise: a lawyer who discovers his client has been lying to him from the start, and everything falls apart.)

Marc, ami: Show Oui, on sentait la tension monter à chaque scène ; la salle était pleine, les spectateurs étaient vraiment silencieux, personne ne bougeait.

(Yes, you could feel the tension build with each scene. The theater was full and the audience was completely silent — nobody moved.)

Nadia, amie: Show Et la musique ! Ça change tout dans un thriller ; sans ça, la même histoire passerait presque comme un simple drame psychologique.

(And the music! It changes everything in a thriller. Without it, the same story would almost come across as a simple psychological drama.)

Marc, ami: Show La prochaine fois, j’aimerais voir une comédie, quelque chose de plus léger ; tu regardes les critiques, et on choisit une sortie ciné pour le week-end prochain ?
