Understanding How to Indicate a Precise Moment in French

In this lesson, you will learn important prepositions used to specify exact moments in time in French. These prepositions help place actions or events clearly within hours, dates, months, seasons, years, or centuries.

Key Prepositions and Their Usage

  • À is used before an exact hour. For example, Je vois ma famille à vingt heures.
  • Le is placed before a specific date or day of the week, such as Tu fêtes ton anniversaire le 3 mai.
  • En introduces months, seasons, or years, e.g., Elle part en vacances en juillet.
  • Au is used before centuries, for instance Il est né au 18ème siècle.

Expressing Habitual Actions

When le is used before a day of the week, it conveys a habitual or repeated action, like Je vais au basket le samedi.

Differences from English

Unlike English, which often uses different constructions (e.g., "at 8 p.m.", "on May 3rd", "in July"), French prepositions tightly correspond to these time expressions, and precise use is essential for clarity. For example, French uses à for hours but le for dates, unlike English which uses "at" for both hours and some dates. Also, the use of le to indicate habitual actions has no direct equivalent in English and is a unique feature to remember.

Helpful Vocabulary

  • Heure — hour/time
  • Date — date (day and month)
  • Mois — month
