Modal Verbs: Devoir, Falloir, Pouvoir, Vouloir

This lesson introduces four essential French modal verbs: vouloir (to want), devoir (must/have to), pouvoir (can/may), and falloir (to be necessary). Modal verbs express obligation, permission, or desire and are always followed by another verb in the infinitive form.

Key Characteristics

  • Vouloir means "to want" and shows willingness or desire. Example: Je veux goûter ce fromage.
  • Devoir indicates obligation or necessity. Example: Je dois peser les ingrédients.
  • Pouvoir expresses ability or permission. Example: Je peux cuisiner avec toi ?
  • Falloir is an impersonal verb used exclusively in the third person singular to mean "it is necessary." Example: Il faut goûter avant de choisir.

Usage Tips

Remember that these modal verbs are followed directly by an infinitive verb, never by a conjugated form. Also, falloir does not change form except for il faut.

Differences Between French and English Modal Verbs

Unlike English modal verbs, French modals like vouloir, devoir, and pouvoir conjugate normally and combine with infinitives. The verb falloir has no direct personal equivalent in English and is always used impersonally, roughly translating to "must" or "have to." For example, "Il faut étudier" means "It is necessary to study" or simply "You must study."

Helpful phrases include:

  • Je veux apprendre. — I want to learn.
  • Tu dois pratiquer. — You must practice.
  • Nous pouvons commencer. — We can start.
  • Il faut écouter. — One must listen.
This lesson is designed for A1 level learners ready to use common modal verbs in everyday conversation and basic instructions.
