Understanding French Ordinal Numbers: Premier, Deuxième...

In this lesson, you will learn about French ordinal numbers, which are used to indicate order, rank, or position. Ordinal numbers are essential when you want to organize items, describe sequences, or mention ranks and dates.

What are ordinal numbers?

Ordinal numbers express the position of an item in a list, such as first, second, third, etc. In French, the ordinal numbers differ slightly from cardinal numbers (one, two, three...). For example, the cardinal number un becomes premier (masc.) / première (fem.) as the ordinal number.

Examples of French ordinal numbers

  • 1 - Premier / Première (first)
  • 2 - Deuxième or sometimes Second / Seconde (second)
  • 3 - Troisième (third)
  • 4 - Quatrième (fourth)
  • 5 - Cinquième (fifth)
  • 6 - Sixième (sixth)
  • 7 - Septième (seventh)
  • 8 - Huitième (eighth)
  • 9 - Neuvième (ninth)
  • 10 - Dixième (tenth)

Key points to remember

  • Except for premier/première, French ordinal numbers usually do not change form based on gender.
  • Second/Seconde can replace deuxième when only two items are involved, like in Seconde Guerre Mondiale.
  • Use these numbers correctly to describe order in ranking, floors in a building, chapters, and more.

Differences between English and French ordinal numbers

One notable difference is that in French, only the first ordinal number changes to agree with gender (premier/première), while in English words like “first” remain the same for all genders. Also, French allows the use of second/seconde instead of deuxième, which is uncommon in English where only "second" is standard. Furthermore, while English ordinal numbers are mostly formed by adding suffixes (e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd), French ordinal numbers have unique forms that must be memorized.

Useful phrases:
Elle est arrivée première à la course. — She arrived first in the race.
Le deuxième jour, nous avons visité le musée. — On the second day, we visited the museum.
Remember these differences and practice the pronunciation and spelling of ordinal numbers to improve fluency.
