Agreement of Adjectives in Italian

In this lesson, we focus on La concordanza degli aggettivi, which means the agreement of adjectives in Italian. Understanding how adjectives change according to the gender and number of the nouns they describe is essential for clear and correct communication.

Basic Rules

Adjectives in Italian must agree with the noun they modify in both gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). For example, the adjective alto changes to:

  • Alto for masculine singular: Il ragazzo è alto.
  • Alti for masculine plural: I ragazzi sono alti.
  • Alta for feminine singular: La ragazza è alta.
  • Alte for feminine plural: Le ragazze sono alte.

Adjectives Ending in -e

Adjectives ending in -e only have two forms that change for number but not gender. For example:

  • grande (singular, both masculine and feminine)
  • grandi (plural, both masculine and feminine)

Special Plural Forms

Some adjectives ending in -co, -ca, -go, -ga form the plural as -chi, -che, -ghi, -ghe. For example:

  • lungo becomes lunghi

Helpful Examples

Practice with sentences like: La ragazza ha i capelli lunghi e gli occhi grandi. or I ragazzi sono alti e simpatici. These show how multiple adjectives agree with their nouns.

Differences and Useful Notes

Unlike English, where adjectives remain unchanged regardless of the noun’s gender or number (e.g., “tall boy” and “tall girl”), Italian adjectives change form to match. This means you must always identify the noun’s gender and number first. For example, the English adjective “big” corresponds to grande in Italian, which only changes between singular and plural but not gender.

Some useful phrases:

  • Il ragazzo è alto. — The boy is tall.
  • La ragazza è alta. — The girl is tall.
  • I ragazzi sono alti. — The boys are tall.
  • Le ragazze sono alte. — The girls are tall.
