Understanding Spanish Ordinal Numbers

This lesson focuses on the use of ordinal numbers in Spanish, which indicate the position or order of items in a sequence. Ordinal numbers are essential for describing ranks, steps, floors, chapters, and dates.

Basic Forms and Gender Agreement

Spanish ordinal numbers change form depending on the gender and number of the noun they describe. For example, primero (first, masculine) and primera (first, feminine). The lesson covers the ordinal numbers from first to tenth:

  • Primero/Primera (1st)
  • Segundo/Segunda (2nd)
  • Tercero/Tercera (3rd)
  • Cuarto/Cuarta (4th)
  • Quinto/Quinta (5th)
  • Sexto/Sexta (6th)
  • Séptimo/Séptima (7th)
  • Octavo/Octava (8th)
  • Noveno/Novena (9th)
  • Décimo/Décima (10th)

Important Usage Details

In Spanish, ordinal numbers must agree in gender and number with the noun they modify. For masculine singular nouns, primero and tercero lose the final "o" and become primer and tercer. For example, el primer capítulo (the first chapter) and el tercer día (the third day).

Additionally, after tenth, it is more common to use cardinal numbers instead of ordinal numbers for positions.

Comparing English and Spanish Ordinals

Unlike English, which uses the same ordinal form regardless of gender (first, second, third), Spanish ordinal numbers reflect gender and sometimes shorten before masculine singular nouns. Also, whereas English ordinals are used regularly beyond ten (eleventh, twelfth, etc.), Spanish speakers usually prefer cardinal numbers from eleven onward.

Useful Phrases to Practice

  • El cuarto capítulo es muy interesante. (The fourth chapter is very interesting.)
  • Ella vive en el primer piso de este edificio. (She lives on the first floor of this building.)
  • Recuerdo el segundo concierto con mucho cariño. (I fondly remember the second concert.)
