Time adverbs (Zeitadverbien): what they do

Zeitadverbien tell you when something happens.

  • jetzt = now
  • heute = today
  • morgen = tomorrow
  • dann = then (after that / next)
  • bald = soon
  • Wann? = when? (question word)
  • Wie lange? = how long? (question phrase)

Two correct positions in the sentence

You will see two common positions. Both are correct:

Position Pattern Example
After the verb Subject + verb + time adverb + … Ich lese jetzt ein Buch.
At the beginning Time adverb + verb + subject + … Heute male ich ein Gemälde.

Key rule: the verb stays in position 2

German main clauses follow the V2 rule: the conjugated verb is in position 2.

  • If the sentence starts with the subject, it looks “normal” (English-like).
  • If the sentence starts with a time adverb, the verb is still #2, so the subject moves after the verb.

Question adverbs: they must come first

Wann and Wie lange are question starters. They go in position 1.

  • Wann asks for a point in time (time / day).
  • Wie lange asks for a duration (minutes / weeks / years).
Question Typical answer
Wann gehst du ins Kino? Ich gehe morgen ins Kino.
Wie lange spielst du schon ein Instrument? Seit zwei Jahren. / Zwei Stunden.

Self-check: If it’s a question with Wann / Wie lange, start with it, then put the verb directly after it.

Meaning traps: “dann” and “bald” in real life

  • dann = “after that / next”. Often used for sequences: Erst… dann…
  • bald = “soon” (not a specific time). Often with plans: bald wieder = soon again

Examples:

  • Ich mache zuerst Sport. Dann koche ich.
  • Ich bin im Meeting. Ich rufe dich bald an.

Mini checklist before you speak

  1. Do I want to emphasize when? Put the time adverb in position 1.
  2. Is it a normal statement? Time adverb can go after the verb.
  3. Did I keep the verb in position 2?
  4. Is it a Wann / Wie lange question? Put it first, then the verb.

  2. Question adverbs like Wann and Wie lange come at the beginning of the sentence.

Exercise 2: Rewrite the phrases

Instruction: Rewrite the sentences: Put the time adverb at the beginning of the sentence (position 1) and pay attention to the correct word order (e.g. “Ich arbeite heute.” → “Heute arbeite ich.”). For the question, formulate the appropriate question sentence with the question adverb.
