Verkleinwoorden

Verkleinwoorden worden gevormd door een achtervoegsel toe te voegen aan een zelfstandig naamwoord, zoals jasje, deurtje, armpje.

What is a verkleinwoord (diminutive)?

In Dutch you often make words “small” with a diminutive (verkleinwoord).
English usually uses little or small (a little house), Dutch usually adds an ending (een huisje).
Diminutives are very common in daily Dutch: they can mean
- something is really small: een kopje koffie (a small cup)
- or make the tone softer / friendlier: Neem nog een koekje (cookie, biscuit)

Key rule 1 – The endings

Dutch diminutives use only a few endings:

-je
-tje
-etje
-pje
-kje

Good news: the pronunciation is almost always like English “-tje” (a kind of t-ye sound).
The spelling changes, not the sound.

Key rule 2 – The article: always het

Every diminutive is a het-word, even if the “big” noun was de.

Remember: if you see a word with -je, -tje, -etje, -pje, -kje → use het.

How to choose the right ending (step by step)

Most of the work is spelling. Use this small decision tree.

Does the word already end in a vowel (a, e, i, o, u, y)?
- → Often add -tje.
- Examples: auto → autootje, oma → omaatje (not in your table, but same pattern).
Does the word end in -m?
- → Add -pje.
- arm → armpje (not ~~armje~~)
- Tip: think “m” becomes “mp”.
Does the word end in -ing?
- → Change -ing to -inkje.
- woning → woninkje (not ~~woningtje~~)
- So: …ing → …inkje.
Does the word end in a short vowel + single consonant?
(like weg, bed, man)
- → Double the consonant and usually add -je or -tje.
- weg → weggetje (g doubles)
- This keeps the vowel short.
Otherwise
- → Often just add -je and adjust spelling if needed.
- jas → jasje, boom → boompje.

At A1 you do not need all special cases. Focus on the patterns you see in the course.

Typical learner mistakes to avoid

Using “de” instead of “het”
- ~~de jasje~~ → het jasje
- ~~de deurtje~~ → het deurtje
Forgetting spelling changes
- ~~woningtje~~ → woninkje
- ~~armje~~ → armpje
- ~~wegtje~~ → weggetje
Mixing English and Dutch
- ~~kleine boom~~ when you want the Dutch pattern → better: boom → boompje.
- You can also say kleine boom, but that is grammar of adjectives, not diminutives.

When and why do Dutch speakers use diminutives?

Real size: it is really small.
- een kamertje – a very small room
- een boompje – a small tree / young tree
Polite / soft tone:
- Wilt u een kopje koffie? – more friendly than kop koffie.
Affection:
- mijn zoontje, mijn hondje – emotional, caring.

For A1: it is enough to recognise that the form changes and the meaning is often “small” or “softer”.

Mini checklist: can you do this?

Can you see the diminutive ending in a word (-je, -tje, -etje, -pje, -kje)?
Do you automatically use het with every diminutive?
Can you make the diminutive of:
- jas → ? (answer: jasje)
- deur → ? (answer: deurtje)
- weg → ? (answer: weggetje)
- woning → ? (answer: woninkje)
- arm → ? (answer: armpje)
- boom → ? (answer: boompje)

If you can answer these, you are ready to use diminutives in conversation.

Diminutives end in -je, -tje, -etje, -kje, -pje.
The spelling sometimes changes: woning → woninkje.
Definite article: Diminutives always take 'het' as their article.
