Het Zweetkamertje van de Universiteit Leiden heeft een lange geschiedenis. Studenten wachtten hier vroeger gespannen op hun diploma. Sinds de 17e eeuw mogen afgestudeerden en gepromoveerden hier ook hun handtekening op de muur zetten.
The Sweat Room of Leiden University has a long history. Students used to wait here nervously for their diploma. Since the 17th century, graduates and PhD recipients have also been allowed to put their signature on the wall here.

Exercise 2: Text

Instruction: 1. Read the text in pairs. 2. Memorize the phrases by covering the translation.

Wanneer een student afstudeert in de universiteit Leiden, schrijven ze hun handtekening in "het zweetkamertje".

When a student graduates from Leiden University, they write their signature in "the sweat room".
Het zweetkamertje is de wachtruimte na het eindexamen aan de Universiteit Leiden. (The sweat room is the waiting room after the final exam at Leiden University.)
Sinds 1641 schrijven studenten hier hun naam als ze geslaagd zijn voor hun tentamen of hun diploma hebben gehaald. (Since 1641, students write their name here when they have passed their exam or received their diploma.)
Als je klaar bent met je verdediging, wacht je in het zweetkamertje op je begeleider. (When you are done with your defense, you wait in the sweat room for your supervisor.)
Het kamertje heet zo omdat je er wacht op je resultaat; vroeger was het een opslagruimte. (The room is called that because you wait there for your result; it used to be a storage room.)
Je begeleider komt je halen om te vertellen of je geslaagd bent of gezakt. (Your supervisor comes to get you to tell you whether you passed or failed.)
Als je geslaagd bent, kun je je diploma ophalen. (If you passed, you can collect your diploma.)
Ook koning Willem-Alexander, zijn neef en zijn broer hebben in het zweetkamertje gewacht. (Also King Willem-Alexander, his cousin and his brother have waited in the sweat room.)
De koning studeerde geschiedenis en zijn neef studeerde rechten aan de Universiteit Leiden. (The king studied history and his cousin studied law at Leiden University.)
De laatste student die zijn naam schreef, was iemand die promoveerde met een PhD. (The last student who wrote their name was someone who received a PhD.)
Vandaag tekenen studenten nog steeds met potlood, zodat de muur niet te vol raakt. (Today students still sign with a pencil so the wall does not get too full.)
Er is nog wat plek, maar met 300 tot 400 handtekeningen per dag raakt het kamertje langzaam vol. (There is still some space, but with 300 to 400 signatures per day the room is slowly filling up.)
