Learn about Spanish demonstrative adjectives 'este', 'ese', and 'aquel' to describe objects by distance and gender. Understand their agreement in gender and number with nouns, and how they help express spatial relationships through practical examples like 'este día' (this day) and 'aquella receta' (that recipe over there). This lesson is designed for A1 Spanish learners to build a strong foundation in using these essential adjectives accurately.
  1. Demonstrative adjectives agree in gender and number with the noun.
  2. We use them to recognise the spatial or temporal distance of something.

Demonstrative Adjectives: Este, ese, aquel

In Spanish, demonstrative adjectives point out nouns by indicating their relative distance in space or time. This lesson covers the essential demonstrative adjectives este, ese, and aquel, which correspond to "this," "that," and "that over there" in English, respectively.

Agreement in Gender and Number

These adjectives must agree with the noun they modify in both gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). For example, for something close, you say este día (this day - masculine singular) or esta camisa (this shirt - feminine singular).

Spatial Distance

  • Close: este, esta, estos, estas
  • Medium distance: ese, esa, esos, esas
  • Far: aquel, aquella, aquellos, aquellas

These words help specify how near or far something is relative to the speaker, which is a common way to provide context in conversations.

Examples to Remember

  • Este día es duro. (This day is hard.)
  • Esos países son grandes. (Those countries are big.)
  • Aquella receta es vieja. (That recipe over there is old.)

Important Notes

While English only distinguishes "this" and "that," Spanish adds aquel for more distant objects. Also, Spanish adjectives always match the noun in gender and number, unlike English.

Useful Phrases and Differences

To say "This skirt is tight," you use Esta falda es estrecha. Unlike English, which does not change "this," Spanish changes the adjective to match falda (feminine singular). Similarly, "Those hats are thick" is Aquellos sombreros son gruesos. with a masculine plural adjective.
