Adverbien der Häufigkeit (immer, oft, nie)

Lerne, wie du mit Wörtern wie „immer“, „oft“ oder „nie“ über Häufigkeiten sprechen kannst.

(Learn how to talk about frequency with words like “always”, “often”, or “never”.)

What these words do (frequency adverbs)

immer, fast immer, oft, manchmal, selten, fast nie, nie tell you how often something happens.

German Meaning Quick idea
immeralways100%
fast immeralmost always~90%
oftoften~75%
manchmalsometimes~50%
seltenrarely~25%
fast niealmost never~10%
nienever0%

Core rule: position in the sentence

In simple A1 sentences, put the frequency adverb directly after the conjugated verb (the verb in position 2).

  • Ich mache oft Sport.
  • Sie geht fast immer ins Fitnessstudio.
  • Wir spielen nie Tennis.

Find the conjugated verb first (your reliable method)

  1. Find the verb that changes with the subject (mache / gehst / geht / spielen).
  2. Put the adverb right after that verb.
  3. Everything else comes after: object, place, time, extra info.
Step Example
Verb (V2) Nach der Arbeit gehe ich …
+ Frequency Nach der Arbeit gehe ich oft
+ Activity Nach der Arbeit gehe ich oft joggen.

Very common confusion: time/place vs. frequency

Time/place can go at the beginning, but the adverb still stays after the conjugated verb.

  • Am Wochenende mache ich immer Sport.
  • Im Sommer schwimme ich manchmal im See.

Self-check: If you moved a time phrase to the front, did you keep the adverb after the verb?

Negation: “nie” vs. “nicht”

  • nie = frequency: 0% (the action does not happen)
  • nicht = general “not” (negates a part of the sentence)
Meaning Correct example
never (frequency) Ich gehe nie boxen.
not today / not now (not frequency) Ich gehe heute nicht boxen.

Tip: If you can answer “How often?”, use nie / fast nie etc.

Two-verb structures: where does it go?

With two verbs (a conjugated verb + an infinitive), the adverb still goes after the conjugated verb.

  • Ich gehe oft joggen.
  • Wir wollen manchmal schwimmen.

Wrong pattern to avoid: Ich gehe joggen oft.

Mini checklist (before you speak)

  1. Do I have the conjugated verb in position 2?
  2. Is my frequency adverb immediately after that verb?
  3. Did I avoid capital letters? (These adverbs are usually not capitalized: immer, not Immer.)
  1. Adverbs of frequency come after the conjugated verb.
Adverb (adverb)Beispiel (example)
Immer (100%) (always (100%))Ich mache immer Sport am Wochenende. (I do always sport on the weekend.)
Fast immer (90%) (almost always (90%))Sie geht fast immer ins Fitnessstudio. (She goes almost always to the gym.)
Oft (75%) (often (75%))Wir spielen oft Basketball nach der Schule. (We play often basketball after school.)
Manchmal (50%) (sometimes (50%))Er schwimmt manchmal im See. (He swims sometimes in the lake.)
Selten (25%) (rarely (25%))Ich tanze selten, aber ich mag es. (I dance rarely, but I like it.)
Fast nie (10%) (almost never (10%))Wir spielen fast nie Tennis. (We play almost never tennis.)
Nie (0%) (never (0%))Ich gehe nie boxen. (I never go boxing.)

Exercise 1: Multiple choice
