Konnektoren: weil, dann, auch, auch nicht

Konnektoren haben folgende Funktion: Sätze logisch verbinden – Gründe geben, Folgen ausdrücken und Informationen ergänzen.

(Connectors have the following function: linking sentences logically – giving reasons, expressing consequences, and adding information.)

What these connectors do (quick map)

  • weil = gives a reason (“because”)
  • dann = shows the next step / result in time (“then”)
  • auch = adds one more similar point (“also / too”)
  • auch nicht = adds a second negative point (“not … either / neither”)

weil: the key rule is word order (verb goes to the end)

  • weil introduces a reason clause.
  • In the weil-clause, the conjugated verb goes to the end.

Ich mchte die Wohnung mieten, weil sie sehr ruhig ist.
Wir nehmen die Wohnung nicht, weil sie zu teuer ist.
  • Common mistake: keeping “normal” word order after weil.
    • … weil sie ist sehr ruhig.
    • Correct: … weil sie sehr ruhig ist.

weil at the beginning: first position means the verb comes early in the next part

  • You can start with the reason. Then you use a comma, and the next part starts like this:
  • Weil-clause + , + verb + …
  • Weil die Wohnung sehr ruhig ist, mchte ich sie mieten.
  • Weil das Zimmer klein ist, nehme ich es nicht.

dann: sequencing (no special verb-at-the-end rule)

  • dann links actions in order: step 1 d2 step 2.
  • Typical pattern: Sentence 1, dann sentence 2.
  • Word order usually stays “normal” in sentence 2 (verb in position 2).
  • Wir schauen uns das WG-Zimmer an, dann sprechen wir mit dem Vermieter.
  • Ich rufe zuerst an, dann frage ich nach dem Termin.
  • Also possible: Dann as the first word of a new sentence.
  • Dann unterschreiben wir den Vertrag.

auch: adding one more item (where to place it)

  • auch means: “in addition / too”.
  • Place auch close to what you are adding.
What you want to add Example
an extra thing Ich mchte ein Einzelzimmer. Ich mchte auch einen Balkon.
a second requirement Wir brauchen Internet. Wir brauchen auch eine Kfcche.
  • Spoken German often uses: … und … auch …
  • Ich brauche eine Kfcche, und ich brauche auch einen Balkon.

auch nicht: “not … either” (the second negative)

  • Use auch nicht when the first sentence is already negative.
  • Meaning: “neither / not … either”.
  • Ich reserviere das Hotel nicht. Die Villa reserviere ich auch nicht.
  • Ich mchte nicht in der Stadt wohnen. An einer Hauptstradfe mchte ich auch nicht wohnen.
  • Typical learner confusion:
    • auch = positive addition
    • auch nicht = negative addition (after a “not” idea)
