Directional prepositions: the “Wohin?” idea (movement)

These prepositions answer Wohin? = Where to?

You move from A → B, or your location changes.
Very often, the noun after the preposition is in the accusative.

Quick contrast:

Wohin? (to where?) → direction, movement
Wo? (where?) → position, no movement (different topic)

The core pattern: “in + accusative” for going into places

Use in + accusative when you go into a place (often with an article).

“nach” vs “zu”: two ways to say “to”

English “to” splits mainly into nach and zu.

The “dative forms” you will see with zu / bis zu

You often don’t “see” the dative directly—German hides it in contractions:

“von … nach”: stating start and destination clearly

Use this to give a clean A → B route (typical for travel).

von + starting point
nach + destination (city/country without article)

Example: Der Zug fährt von Köln nach München.

Self-check: If you can answer “from where?” and “to where?” in one sentence, von … nach is often the best structure.

Route prepositions: through, over, along, around

These describe the path, not just the destination.

Typical learner traps (and quick fixes)

Trap: mixing Wo? and Wohin?
Fix: movement → in die Stadt, position → in der Stadt (later topic)
Trap: using zu with cities
Fix: usually nach Berlin, not ~~zu Berlin~~
Trap: forgetting that zu is dative
Fix: learn the ready-made forms: zum, zur
Trap: “um” without “herum” in this pattern

Directional prepositions answer the question „Wohin?“ and express movement from A to B or a change of location.
The place expression is in the accusative.

Exceptions!

„Zu“ requires the dative, even though it indicates direction: „Ich gehe zur Schule."
„Nach“ is used for cities and countries without an article: „Ich fliege nach Spanien."
