  1. To tell the time, you use Es ist followed by Mittag, Mitternacht or a specific time.

Exceptions!

  1. Formal context: The 24-hour format. Example: 20:30 -> Es ist zwanzig Uhr dreißig.
  2. Sometimes the time of day is also indicated with “in the morning,” “in the afternoon,” “in the evening,” or “at night,” especially in the 12-hour clock format.
