Exercise 1: Dialogue

Instruction: 1. Read the dialogue in pairs. 2. Memorize the phrases by covering the translation. 3. Cover one speaker’s lines, give alternative answers with your teacher, and write them down.

Luis va a la biblioteca para pedir un libro de literatura clásica. Habla con la bibliotecaria.

Luis goes to the library to request a classical literature book. He speaks with the librarian.
1. Luis: Buenos días. ¿Me podrías ayudar? Estoy buscando una novela de Gabriel García Márquez. (Good morning. Could you help me? I am looking for a novel by Gabriel García Márquez.)
2. Bibliotecaria: Claro, ¿puedo ver tu carnet de la biblioteca? (Sure, can I see your library card?)
3. Luis: Sí, aquí lo tienes. Me interesa leer algo de literatura latinoamericana. (Yes, here it is. I am interested in reading something from Latin American literature.)
4. Bibliotecaria: En ese caso, te recomiendo 'Cien años de soledad'. Es muy famoso. (In that case, I recommend 'One Hundred Years of Solitude.' It is very famous.)
5. Luis: Perfecto. ¿Dónde está esa novela? (Perfect. Where is that novel?)
6. Bibliotecaria: Está en la sección de novela moderna, al fondo, cerca de la sala de lectura. (It is in the modern novel section, at the back, near the reading room.)
7. Luis: Gracias. ¿Cuánto tiempo puedo tener el libro? (Thanks. How long can I keep the book?)
8. Bibliotecaria: Si no hay reservas, puedes cogerlo hasta 15 días. Después, tienes que devolverlo. (If there are no reservations, you can take it for up to 15 days. Afterwards, you have to return it.)
9. Luis: Muy bien. También quiero encontrar un cuento para mi sobrino. (Very well. I also want to find a story for my nephew.)
10. Bibliotecaria: Tenemos una sección infantil con muchos cuentos clásicos. (We have a children's section with many classic stories.)
11. Luis: ¡Genial! Si tengo tiempo, también miraré algo de poesía española. (Great! If I have time, I will also look at some Spanish poetry.)
12. Bibliotecaria: Cuando quieras, podemos ayudarte. También puedes usar el catálogo digital para buscar más libros. (Whenever you want, we can help you. You can also use the digital catalog to search for more books.)
13. Luis: ¡Muchas gracias por la ayuda, muy amable! (Thank you very much for the help, very kind!)
