Introduction to Spanish Prepositions of Place

This lesson focuses on basic Spanish prepositions of place, essential for describing where objects or people are located in relation to others. Using familiar vocabulary related to dishes and kitchenware, the lesson introduces common prepositions like en, sobre, and entre, among others.

Key Prepositions Covered

Important Highlights

Note that some prepositions, like en, sobre, and entre, are used without a following preposition, for example: El vaso está en el armario. This differs from prepositions followed by de, as in debajo de or delante de.

Useful Expressions and Their Function

These expressions help you specify the location of objects clearly and naturally in Spanish. For example:

  • El bol está delante del plato. translates as "The bowl is in front of the plate."
  • Las servilletas están debajo del plato. means "The napkins are under the plate."

Comparing Spanish and English Prepositions

Unlike English, where prepositions like "on" or "in" do not require another preposition, Spanish sometimes uses compound forms with de such as debajo de (under), which literally means "under of." It's important to recognize these forms and practice their correct use to convey location accurately.

Also, note that Spanish prepositions often agree in gender and number with the noun that follows, contracting with the definite article when appropriate, such as del (de + el) in debajo del plato.
