Instruction Language Differences and Equivalents

Unlike English, Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet and has a different verb conjugation system. In Bulgarian, verbs change their endings according to person and number more extensively than English. For example, the verb "чекирам" (to check in) conjugates as "аз чекирам" (I check in), "ти чекираш" (you check in), and so forth.

Some Bulgarian travel vocabulary borrows directly from English but is adapted to Bulgarian phonetics, such as "гейт" (gate) and "чекирам" (to check in). This can make remembering terms easier for English speakers.

Additionally, Bulgarian articles are postfixed (attached to the end of nouns) unlike English. For example, "полетът" means "the flight," where "-ът" is the definite article suffix.

Practical Phrases for Travelers

  • "Мога ли да взема карта за мястото?" — Can I get a seat map?
  • "Кога излита полетът?" — When does the flight depart?
  • "Покажете вашите документи, моля." — Please show your documents.
  • "Тествайте багажа си, моля." — Please test your baggage.
  • "Къде е най-близкият терминал?" — Where is the nearest terminal?

By learning these expressions and familiarizing yourself with the flow of conversations at the airport, you will gain confidence traveling in Bulgarian-speaking environments.
