Je mening geven

Zinnen om je mening te geven, zoals ik vind, naar mijn mening, volgens mij.

Two ways to give your opinion (and two different word orders)

In this unit you practise opinion phrases that trigger two different sentence patterns:

  • A. “dat”-clause (subordinate clause) → the finite verb goes to the end.
  • B. Sentence start phrase (Volgens mij / Naar mijn mening) → inversion in the main clause (verb in position 2).

A) “Ik vind/denk/geloof … dat” + subordinate clause (verb at the end)

After dat, you are in a subordinate clause (bijzin).

  • Keep the subject after dat.
  • Put the finite verb (e.g. is / zijn / werkt / kan / moet) at the end.
Structure Example
Ik vind dat + subject + … + verb Ik vind dat dit compromis eerlijk is.
Ik denk dat + subject + … + verb Ik denk dat we vandaag een besluit nemen.
Ik geloof dat + subject + … + verb Ik geloof dat iedereen recht heeft op zijn eigen mening heeft.
Ik geloof dat iedereen heeft recht op zijn eigen mening.
Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat + subject + … + verb Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat deze afspraak voor het hele team werkt.

What to watch out for: don’t copy English word order. In Dutch, the finite verb usually moves to the end in a dat-clause.

B) “Volgens mij / Naar mijn mening” + inversion (verb before subject)

Volgens mij and Naar mijn mening act like a sentence starter.

That means: in the main clause, the finite verb must be in position 2 → so it comes before the subject.

Correct pattern Common mistake
Volgens mij is dit compromis niet eerlijk. Volgens mij dit compromis is niet eerlijk.
Naar mijn mening zijn de offertes duidelijk. Naar mijn mening de offertes zijn duidelijk.

Quick decision: which pattern do I need?

  1. Do you say “dat”?
    • Yes → use a bijzin → verb at the end.
  2. Do you start with “Volgens mij / Naar mijn mening”?
    • Yes → main clause with inversion → verb first, then subject.

Self-check (2 simple tests)

  • Dat-test: after dat, can you point to the last word as the finite verb?

    Ik vind dat deze oplossing realistisch is.

  • Position-2 test: after Volgens mij / Naar mijn mening, is the next word a verb?

    Volgens mij werkt dit voorstel niet.
