Keep in mind: you do not translate word by word from English. Look at the function of the words in the sentence.

2. The four key ideas: reason, cause, goal, means

Ask yourself with every sentence: what is this part of the sentence doing?

Reason (reden) – feeling, reaction, opinion.
- Often with verbs like: lachen (laugh), bang zijn (be afraid), boos zijn (be angry), blij zijn (be happy).
- Preposition: om.
- Example: Ik lach om die grap. – I laugh about that joke.
Cause (oorzaak) – something outside you that produces a result.
- Preposition: door.
- Often with weather, traffic, problems, accidents, pressure.
- Example: De straat is nat door de regen.
Goal / direction (doel: person or place)
- To someone (recipient): aan.
  - Ik geef het contract aan mijn manager.
- To a place (movement): naar.
  - Ik ga naar kantoor.
Goal / purpose of an action (doel: activity)
- Preposition: om + te + infinitive.
- Example: Ik gebruik mijn laptop om te werken.
Means (middel) – with what you do something.
- met + thing or person: tool, vehicle, company.
- op + type of transport (bike, scooter, motorbike, horse) or platform.
- Examples:
  - Ik ga met de bus.
  - Ik ga op de fiets.
  - Ik werk met een laptop.

4. The special case: om

Om can do two jobs. That is why it feels confusing at first.

Om + noun / pronoun → reason
- Ik lach om die grap. – I laugh about that joke.
- Ik ben zenuwachtig om de presentatie.
Om te + infinitive → purpose / goal of an action
- Ik leer Nederlands om te werken in Nederland.
- Zij belt om te zeggen dat ze later komt.

Self-check: Can you replace it by English "about"? Then it is usually reason: om + noun.
Can you replace it by English "to…" (to do something)? Then you need om te + verb.

5. Typical questions and traps for English speakers

“In English I say ‘because of’ or ‘from’. Do I use ‘door’?”
- Use door when you talk about a cause that produces a result.
  - Ik ben ziek door een virus.
  - Er is file door een ongeluk.
- Do not use ~~om de regen~~ for because of the rain. Say: door de regen.
“In English I say ‘to’ very often. Do I always use ‘naar’?”
- naar → movement to a place.
  - naar huis, naar het werk, naar Italië
- aan → movement to a person.
  - een e-mail aan de directie
- om te → purpose (to do something).
  - Ik bel om te klagen.
“In English I say ‘by car / by train’. Is it always ‘met’?”
- General rule: met + article + transport.
  - met de trein, met de bus, met de auto
- But for bike, scooter, motorbike, horse you normally use op.
  - op de fiets, op de scooter, op de motor, op een paard

6. Mini decision guide: choose the right preposition

Are you talking about a feeling or reaction?
- Yes → probably om + noun.
  - Hij is boos om de fout.
Are you talking about a cause ("because of")?
- Yes → use door.
  - Ik ben laat door de file.
Is something going to a person?
- Yes → use aan.
  - Ik leg het probleem aan mijn leidinggevende uit.
Is someone / something moving to a place?
- Yes → use naar.
  - We gaan morgen naar de klant.
Is the part of the sentence a purpose ("to do something")?
- Yes → use om te + infinitive.
  - Hij blijft langer om te werken.
Is it the means (with what / with whom)?
- Yes → usually met.
  - Ik praat met mijn collega.
  - Ik schrijf met een pen.
- Transport with bike etc. → op.
  - Zij komt op de fiets.

7. Short practice: can you explain your choice?

Look at each sentence and decide: reason, cause, goal (person / place / activity) or means?

Ik ben gestrest door het project.
- Cause → external factor → door.
Ik stuur het rapport aan de klant.
- Goal: person → recipient → aan.
We vliegen morgen naar Brussel.
- Goal: place → direction → naar.
Ik werk thuis met mijn laptop.
- Means → tool → met.
Ik leer Nederlands om te kunnen vergaderen.
- Goal: activity → purpose → om te + verb.

8. Self-check: do you master this?

Can you explain the difference between reason (om) and cause (door) in your own words?
Can you give one example with each:
- om (reason, no verb with te)

If you can do that without looking, you are ready to use these prepositions in conversation.

Tip: in real conversations, say your sentence in English in your head first, then quickly ask: is this reason, cause, goal or means? Then choose the preposition.

Exceptions!

'Om' is used for both reason and goal.
