This lesson covers French reflexive pronouns and reflexive verbs used to indicate actions performed on oneself. It explains the pronouns for singular and plural forms, the structure of reflexive verbs, elision before vowel sounds, and provides practical examples like "Je me réveille" and "Nous nous habillons." It also compares reflexive pronouns in French and English to aid understanding.
  1. You must place the personal pronoun first, then the reflexive pronoun, and finally the pronominal verb: "Je me lève", "Tu te lèves".
  2. In the infinitive, the pronoun "se" is used.
Singulier (Singular)Pluriel (Plural)
Je me réveille (I wake up)Nous nous réveillons (We ourselves wake up)
Tu te réveilles (You wake up)Vous vous réveillez (You wake up)
Il se réveille (He gets up)Ils se réveillent (They wake up)

Exceptions!

  1. "Me", "te" and "se" are elided as "m'", "t'" and "s'" before verbs starting with a vowel or a mute h.

Understanding French Reflexive Pronouns

In this lesson, you will learn about French reflexive pronouns, a key part of forming reflexive verbs. Reflexive verbs describe actions performed by the subject on themselves, such as "Je me réveille" (I wake up).

Structure of Reflexive Verbs

The basic structure combines the subject pronoun with the reflexive pronoun and the verb itself. For example, Je me lève and Tu te lèves.

The reflexive pronouns differ by person and number: me, te, se, nous, vous, se. Notice that in the plural, pronouns like nous and vous are used both as subject and reflexive pronouns, e.g., Nous nous réveillons.

Key Notes

  • In the infinitive form, the reflexive pronoun is always se, as in se laver.
  • When placed before verbs starting with a vowel or a mute "h," the pronouns me, te, se are elided to m', t', s'.

Examples

  • Je me réveille (I wake up)
  • Tu te douches (You take a shower)
  • Nous nous habillons (We get dressed)
  • Il se couche (He goes to bed)
  • Ils se lavent les mains (They wash their hands)

Differences with English

Unlike English, where reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself, etc.) are separate words, French places the reflexive pronoun directly before the verb and integrates it tightly with verb conjugation. Also, some French reflexive pronouns change form depending on the verb starting sound due to elision, a feature not present in English.

Useful words and phrases:

  • Me, te, se: myself, yourself, himself/herself
  • Nous, vous: ourselves, yourselves (plural/formal)
  • Example sentence: "Je me lève tôt" = "I get up early"
