Exercise and a Healthy Lifestyle in Spanish

This lesson focuses on discussing fitness routines and healthy living habits using Spanish vocabulary and grammar appropriate for an A2 level learner. You will explore common outdoor and indoor exercise activities found in Spanish cities, such as spinning, running, yoga, swimming, and hiking. The lesson also introduces possessive adjectives ("mío", "tuyo", "suyo", etc.), helping you express ownership and personal connections within conversations about everyday routines.

Key Language Elements

  • Possessive adjectives: These help you say "my," "your," and "his/her/their" in Spanish – essential for talking about your own exercise gear and routines, e.g., "los compañeros míos" (my companions), "unas pesas tuyas" (your weights).
  • Talking about routine and preferences: Phrases to describe what exercises you do, when, and with whom, like "Voy a la clase de spinning" (I go to spinning class), or "Prefiero correr por el parque" (I prefer running in the park).

Included Practice

The lesson contains dialogues simulating realistic conversations in gyms, parks, and social settings where people coordinate healthy activities. You will encounter useful verbs related to exercising, especially in the past tense (preterite), such as:

  • corrí (I ran)
  • pude (I was able to)
  • entrené (I trained)
  • practiqué (I practiced)

Additionally, the lesson offers multiple-choice exercises to reinforce verb conjugations and a short story to contextualize the vocabulary and grammar presented.

Practical Tips on Language Differences

In Spanish, possessive adjectives like "mío" often come after the noun they qualify and agree in gender and number, unlike English possessives which precede the noun. For example, "mis compañeros" (my companions) vs. the emphatic "compañeros míos" (companions of mine). Also, Spanish verbs describing past actions use specific preterite forms such as "corrí" instead of a simple past "ran," which require practice to master their endings and irregularities. Useful phrases include "¿Cuánto tiempo corres?" (How long do you run?), and "¿Haces algún deporte después del trabajo?" (Do you do any sport after work?), which are conversational and help express frequency and habits.
