Negation with “nicht” and “kein” in whole sentences

Kein vs. nicht: the core decision

German has two main ways to say “not / no”:

  • kein- = “no / not any” + a noun
  • nicht = “not” for everything else (verb, adjective, sentence, definite noun)
What you negate Use Typical meaning
noun with ein/eine or no article kein- no / not a / not any
verb, adjective, or the whole statement nicht not
noun with der/die/das (definite article) or a name nicht not (that one)

A quick check: can you replace it with “ein”? Then use kein-

  1. Find the thing you negate.
  2. If it is a noun, ask: Could I say “ein/eine” here?
  3. If yes → choose kein- (and decline it like an article).
  4. If no → choose nicht.

Examples (adult, practical):

  • Ich habe keinen Termin. (≙ einen Termin)
  • Das ist kein Problem. (≙ ein Problem)
  • Ich bin nicht müde. (adjective)
  • Ich kenne den Chef nicht. (definite: den Chef)

Kein- behaves like “ein-”: choose the correct case ending

kein- changes with gender and case (like ein/eine). The most important A1 endings:

Dative (often after “to/for”) keinem Mann keiner Frau keinem Kind keinen Freunden

What to pay attention to:

  • Masculine accusative: kein → keinen
  • Dative singular: -em (m/n) and -er (f)
  • Dative plural: keinen + often -n on the noun: Freunden

Nicht: what it typically negates (and what learners mix up)

  • adjectives: Ich bin nicht verfügbar.
  • verbs/actions: Ich arbeite heute nicht.
  • definite nouns: Ich finde den Schlüssel nicht. (not “no key”, but “not the key”)
  • the whole statement: Das stimmt nicht.
Meaning you want Correct German Common mistake
“I don’t have time.” (no time available) Ich habe keine Zeit. Ich habe nicht Zeit.
“I’m not tired.” Ich bin nicht müde. Ich bin kein müde.
“I don’t know the address.” (a specific one) Ich kenne die Adresse nicht. Ich kenne keine Adresse. (means: I don’t know any address at all)

Special pattern: “Es gibt …” takes kein-

Es gibt = “there is / there are”. To negate it, use kein-:

  • Es gibt keine Fragen.
  • Es gibt kein Wasser mehr.

  1. Am I negating a noun with ein/eine or no article? → kein-
  2. Am I negating an adjective, a verb, or a definite noun (der/die/das)? → nicht
  3. If it’s kein-: which case is it?
    • subject → Nominative
    • direct object → Accusative (watch: keinen + masculine)
    • after dative verbs like helfen → Dative (watch: keinem/keiner/keinen)
  1. „Kein“ is used to negate nouns with an indefinite article or no article at all.
  2. „Nicht“ negates adjectives, verbs, definite articles, or whole sentences.

Exceptions!

  1. „Es gibt" is negated with „kein" . Example: „Es gibt keine Fragen"
