What these words do (quick meaning)

These are adverbs. They change the intensity or the negation of an adjective or a verb.

Position with adjectives: directly before the adjective

Rule: Put the word immediately before the adjective.

  • Ich bin nicht glücklich.
  • Das Mädchen ist sehr nervös.
  • Der Film ist zu traurig.
  • Ich bin ein bisschen wütend.

Self-check: Can you underline the adjective? Then place nicht / sehr / zu / ein bisschen right in front of it.

Position with verbs: usually after the conjugated verb

In a simple present-tense sentence, the verb is in position 2.

Rule (most common): Put the word after the conjugated verb.

  • Ich weine nicht.
  • Sie lacht sehr viel.
  • Du entschuldigst dich zu oft.
  • Wir lachen ein bisschen.

Self-check: Find the conjugated verb (bin, ist, arbeitest, kommt, lachst…). Put the word right after it.

Two common points that confuse English speakers

  • “nicht” is not “kein”.

    Use nicht to negate adjectives and verbs:

    • Ich bin nicht müde.
    • Ich arbeite heute nicht.

    Keep “kein” for later: it negates nouns (no/none).

  • “zu” is “too” (problematic), not “very”.

    • Der Kaffee ist zu heiß. (too hot to drink comfortably)
    • Der Kaffee ist zu gut. (sounds odd in most contexts)
    • Der Kaffee ist sehr gut. (very good)

Mini word-order formula (use this when you build sentences)

Fast self-test (30 seconds)

  1. Do you describe a state/quality? → word goes right before the adjective.

  2. Do you describe an action? → word goes after the conjugated verb (most of the time at A1).

  3. Are you saying “too (much)”? → use zu, often with another word: zu spät, zu oft, zu laut.
