What is a separable verb (trennbares Verb)?

Some German verbs have a prefix (often a small word like auf-, an-, mit-, vor-, dazu-).

In the present tense, the verb often splits:

verb stem goes in position 2 (the “verb slot”)
prefix goes to the end of the sentence

Think: “German puts the prefix on hold and delivers it at the end.”

The core word order rule (Präsens): “Stem in position 2, prefix at the end”

What counts as “the end” of the sentence?

The prefix goes after:

time phrases: um 8 Uhr, heute, morgen
objects: die Schlüssel, die Briefe
place phrases: vom Postamt, ins Kino

Example: Er holt die Schlüssel am Empfang ab.

When something comes first: the verb is still in position 2

If you start with time/place (very common in real conversation), the stem stays in position 2.

Heute rufe ich dich an.
Um 8 Uhr stehe ich auf.

Some separable verbs have a typical “partner” in the sentence.

Tip: Learn these as chunks: jemandem zuhören, etwas dazugeben.

The one thing to watch: don’t keep the verb together in normal main clauses

Correct: Ich bereite das Essen vor.
Wrong: ~~Ich vorbereite das Essen.~~

If you see the verb in the vocabulary list (e.g. vorbereiten), remember: in a normal present-tense sentence it usually becomes bereite … vor.

With separable verbs, the preposition usually goes at the end of the sentence.
