Present Tense of Regular Verbs in Italian

This lesson focuses on the present tense conjugation of regular verbs in Italian, an essential step for beginners (A1 level) to communicate routine actions and current events. You will learn how to conjugate verbs ending in -are, -ere, and -ire, representing the three main conjugation groups.

Understanding Verb Endings

In Italian, verbs are categorized into three conjugations based on their infinitive endings: -are, -ere, and -ire. Each group follows a specific pattern in the present tense.

For example, consider these verbs:

  • Contattare (to contact) – first conjugation (-are)
  • Chiedere (to ask) – second conjugation (-ere)
  • Capire (to understand) – third conjugation (-ire)

Personal Pronouns and Verb Endings

Although personal pronouns like io (I), tu (you singular), and lui/lei (he/she) can be used, often they are omitted in Italian. This is because the verb endings themselves indicate the subject.

Here is how these verbs conjugate in the present tense:

ContattareChiedereCapire
Io contattoIo chiedoIo capisco
Tu contattiTu chiediTu capisci
Lui / Lei contattaLui / Lei chiedeLui / Lei capisce
Noi contattiamoNoi chiediamoNoi capiamo
Voi contattateVoi chiedeteVoi capite
Loro contattanoLoro chiedonoLoro capiscono

Usage of the Present Tense

The present tense in Italian is primarily used to describe habitual actions or those happening at the moment of speaking. For example:

  • Se invii la mail, ricevi la risposta. (If you send the email, you receive the reply.)
  • Lui chiede sempre il numero di telefono. (He always asks for the phone number.)
  • Noi capiamo quando parli lentamente. (We understand when you speak slowly.)

Notes on Differences with English

Unlike English, where verb endings are often simple and pronouns are generally necessary, Italian verb endings convey the subject clearly, allowing the omission of pronouns.

The three verb infinitives end with different suffixes that determine their conjugation group:

  • -are: generally the largest group, verbs like contattare (to contact)
  • -ere: includes verbs like chiedere (to ask)
  • -ire: verbs like capire (to understand), with some irregularities in conjugation

Useful phrases:

  • Contattare – to contact
  • Chiedere – to ask
  • Capire – to understand
  • Io capisco – I understand
  • Tu chiedi – You ask
  • Loro contattano – They contact
