Exercise 1: Dialogue

Instruction: 1. Read the dialogue in pairs. 2. Memorize the phrases by covering the translation. 3. Cover one speaker’s lines, give alternative answers with your teacher, and write them down.

Pedro y María discuten una propuesta de trabajo y expresan sus opiniones para llegar a un acuerdo.

Pedro and María discuss a work proposal and express their opinions to reach an agreement.
1. Pedro: Me dijeron que la oferta incluía una paga extra anual. (They told me the offer included an annual extra payment.)
2. María: Sí, pero creo que la paga extra no está asegurada, ¿qué piensas tú? (Yes, but I think the extra payment is not guaranteed, what do you think?)
3. Pedro: Yo creo que deberíamos pedir una confirmación más clara. (I think we should ask for a clearer confirmation.)
4. María: Ayer hablamos para pedir un aumento, pero no nos convenció la respuesta. (Yesterday we spoke to ask for a raise, but the answer didn't convince us.)
5. Pedro: ¿Y si hacemos una contraoferta con mejores condiciones? (What if we make a counteroffer with better conditions?)
6. María: No me parece mala idea, pero tiene que ser razonable. (I don't think it's a bad idea, but it has to be reasonable.)
7. Pedro: Nos dijeron que la empresa busca compromiso por nuestra parte. (They told us the company is looking for commitment from us.)
8. María: Yo respondí que nuestro compromiso depende de las condiciones que nos ofrezcan. (I replied that our commitment depends on the conditions they offer us.)
9. Pedro: ¿Recuerdas si aceptaron alguna parte de nuestra propuesta? (Do you remember if they accepted any part of our proposal?)
10. María: Sí, les gustó la idea del horario flexible. Eso es positivo, ¿no? (Yes, they liked the idea of flexible hours. That's positive, isn't it?)
11. Pedro: Entonces podemos contar eso como un resultado de la reunión de hoy. (So we can count that as a result of today's meeting.)
12. María: Aunque no aceptaron el teletrabajo, no fue un no rotundo. (Although they didn't accept telecommuting, it wasn't a flat no.)
13. Pedro: Sin duda, hay margen para seguir negociando. (Without a doubt, there is room to keep negotiating.)
14. María: Solo espero que el acuerdo final sea claro y firme. (I just hope the final agreement is clear and firm.)
