How to Tell Time in Spanish

This lesson introduces you to the foundational expressions and formulas used to tell time in Spanish, specifically designed for beginner (A1) learners. You'll learn how to state the hour clearly and naturally at any time of day.

Basic Formulas for Telling Time

  • En punto (On the hour): Use "Es la" for one o'clock and "Son las" for all other hours. Examples: Es la una., Son las cinco en punto.
  • Adding minutes: Say the hour + "y" + the minutes. Examples: Son las dos y diez., Son las cuatro y media.
  • Subtracting minutes: Say the hour + "menos" + minutes before the hour. Examples: Son las seis menos veinte., Es la una menos cuarto.

Expressing Different Times of Day

In Spanish, specifying morning, afternoon, or night helps clarify the time:

  • Hour + de la mañana (morning) — Example: Es la una de la mañana.
  • Hour + de la tarde (afternoon) — Example: Son las tres de la tarde.
  • Hour + de la noche (night) — Example: Son las once de la noche.

Important Vocabulary Highlights

  • "en punto" means "sharp" or exactly on the hour.
  • "y media" refers to "half past" (30 minutes after the hour).
  • "cuarto" means "quarter" and indicates 15 minutes after or 15 minutes before the hour.

Notable Differences Between English and Spanish Time Expressions

Spanish uses singular "Es la" only for 1:00 because the hour is singular, while "Son las" is plural for all other hours, reflecting the grammatical number. English simply uses "It is" for all hours.

Instead of saying "quarter past" or "quarter to," Spanish often employs "y cuarto" (and quarter) and "menos cuarto" (minus quarter) right after or before the hour.

Also, Spanish explicitly adds parts of the day like "de la mañana," "de la tarde," or "de la noche" to clarify the time, especially important since Spanish does not always use a 24-hour system by default.

Useful Phrases for Practice

  • ¿Qué hora es? — What time is it?
  • Es la una en punto — It is one o'clock sharp.
  • Son las tres y cuarto de la tarde — It is quarter past three in the afternoon.
  • Son las cinco menos veinte — It is twenty to five.
  • Son las ocho y media — It is half past eight.

Mastering these expressions will help you confidently ask and tell time in Spanish in everyday situations.
