Los verbos "Llevar/Seguir" + Gerundio

En español, usamos "llevar/seguir" + gerundio para hablar de acciones que continúan en el tiempo.

(In Spanish, we use "llevar/seguir" + gerund to talk about actions that continue over time.)

What this structure means (llevar / seguir + gerundio)

Use it to talk about an action that is in progress and connected to “now”.

  • llevar + gerundio = “to have been doing (for/since…)” → focus on duration
  • seguir + gerundio = “to still keep doing” → focus on continuation

How to build it (quick formula)

  1. Conjugate llevar or seguir in the present:

    • llevo, llevas, lleva, llevamos, lleváis, llevan
    • sigo, sigues, sigue, seguimos, seguís, siguen

  2. Add a gerundio (English “-ing” form, but Spanish rules):

    • -ar → -ando (trabajar → trabajando)
    • -er / -ir → -iendo (comer → comiendo, vivir → viviendo)

Choosing between llevar and seguir

  • Choose llevar when you want to answer: “How long?”

    Typical time markers: desde (since), desde hace (for), durante (for/during), dos meses, muchos años, un tiempo.

    Example: Llevo dos meses cuidando el jardín.

  • Choose seguir when there is an implicit contrast: “despite changes, it continues” (retirement, a new job, a new plan).

    Common cues: todavía (still), aún (still/yet).

    Example: Sigo haciendo ejercicio tres veces por semana.

Word order: where time expressions and adverbs go

Good news: you can place some words between the auxiliary verb and the gerund.

Llevar + time + gerundio Llevo meses pensando en mi jubilación.
Seguir + adverb + gerundio Sigue todavía trabajando como consultor.
Llevar + noun phrase + gerundio Llevo mucho tiempo decidiendo si mudarme.

Typical mistakes (and how to self-correct)

  • Mistake 1: using present tense instead of gerundio

    Llevo dos años preparo los papeles. → Llevo dos años preparando los papeles.

  • Mistake 2: using an infinitive after seguir

    Sigo buscar información. → Sigo buscando información.

  • Mistake 3: mixing “duration” and “future”

    Llevo mañana trabajando. (duration can’t start “tomorrow”)

    Use: Mañana seguiré trabajando (future: “I will keep working tomorrow”).

Fast self-check (before you speak)

  1. Do I mean duration (“for/since”)? → use llevar.

  2. Do I mean still / continue? → use seguir.

  3. Did I use a gerundio ending: -ando / -iendo?

  4. If I added a time phrase/adverb, is it placed naturally (often between auxiliary and gerund)?

Exceptions!

  1. A word can be added between the verb and the gerund, such as a time adverb or a noun. For example: Llevo meses siendo retirado.

Incorrect: the noun “jubilación” is missing; “jubilar” is an infinitive that does not fit here.
Incorrect: after “llevar” there must be a gerund, not the present tense (preparo).
2.
Incorrect: the sentence adds “tomorrow,” which changes the time frame and does not show present continuity; it can also confuse the use of the gerund with a future reference.
Incorrect: after “seguir” a gerund is used, not an infinitive (hablar).
