What “vorrei” means (and why Italians use it)

Vorrei = “I would like”.

• It is the standard polite way to ask for something in shops, restaurants, hotels, and at work.
• It sounds respectful and professional (less direct than voglio = “I want”).
• You can use it with strangers and service staff without overthinking formality.

How to choose: noun or infinitive?

• If the next word can be “a / an / some” in English → use a noun.

  Vorrei una bottiglia d’acqua.

• If the next idea is an action (to book, to order, to speak) → use the infinitive.

  Vorrei parlare con il responsabile.

Common traps (and how to avoid them)

• Don’t use voglio in polite requests.

  Voglio un tavolo. → Vorrei un tavolo, per favore.

• Don’t conjugate the second verb. After vorrei, the verb stays in the infinitive.

  Vorrei pago con la carta. → Vorrei pagare con la carta.

• Don’t add extra verbs like “have”. Italian usually does not need it here.

  Vorrei avere un caffè. → Vorrei un caffè.

• Spelling matters: vorrei (not vorei).
