Healthy and Unhealthy Habits in Dutch

This lesson focuses on vocabulary and expressions related to common healthy and unhealthy habits, designed for B1 level Dutch learners. You will learn how to discuss lifestyle choices, describe routines, and express preferences in Dutch, enabling you to talk about well-being, diet, exercise, and daily habits effectively.

Key Vocabulary and Phrases

  • Gezonde gewoonten (healthy habits):
    • regelmatig sporten (to exercise regularly)
    • gezond eten (to eat healthily)
    • voldoende slaap krijgen (to get enough sleep)
    • stress vermijden (to avoid stress)
  • Ongezonde gewoonten (unhealthy habits):
    • te veel snoepen (to eat too many sweets)
    • roken (smoking)
    • te weinig bewegen (too little physical activity)
    • laat naar bed gaan (going to bed late)

Talking About Habits

In Dutch, to describe habits or routines, the present tense is often used with adverbs of frequency, such as altijd (always), vaak (often), soms (sometimes), and zelden (rarely). For example:

  • Ik ga vaak naar de sportschool. (I often go to the gym.)
  • Ze rookt nooit. (She never smokes.)

Useful Expressions for Advice and Opinions

  • Je zou meer water moeten drinken. (You should drink more water.)
  • Het is belangrijk om genoeg te slapen. (It is important to get enough sleep.)
  • Ik vind dat gezond eten essentieel is. (I think that healthy eating is essential.)

Differences Between English and Dutch on This Topic

Unlike English, Dutch frequently places the verb at the end of the sentence in subordinate clauses, which affects how you construct sentences with conjunctions like omdat (because) or dat (that). For example:

  • English: "I avoid unhealthy habits because they are bad for health."
Dutch: "Ik vermijd ongezonde gewoonten omdat ze slecht voor de gezondheid zijn." (note verb zijn at sentence end)

Also, some Dutch phrases reflect lifestyle concepts differently, such as stress vermijden meaning 'to avoid stress,' which directly translates but is used commonly in Dutch daily conversation.

This lesson prepares you to confidently discuss and reflect on lifestyle choices in Dutch, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar for intermediate learners.
