Differences and Similarities Between English and Dutch
While learning Dutch social vocabulary, note that some words closely resemble English due to shared Germanic roots (e.g., sociale – social, community is used similarly in Dutch). However, word order in Dutch often differs; for instance, verbs typically come in the second position in the main clause: "Ik woon in de buurt" (I live in the neighborhood). Modal verbs are used similarly but placement can differ, which you will see in examples such as "Ik wil meer mensen ontmoeten" (I want to meet more people).
Useful phrases:
- Hoe gaat u om met nieuwe mensen? – How do you deal with new people?
- Ik voel me geïntegreerd in mijn gemeenschap. – I feel integrated into my community.
- We spreken vaak af in de buurt. – We often meet in the neighborhood.
