Understanding Houseviewing in Dutch: Your B1 Guide

This lesson focuses on language and expressions related to houseviewing, an important topic when searching for accommodation in Dutch-speaking areas. At level B1, you will learn to confidently talk about visiting and inspecting houses or apartments, discussing key features, and asking relevant questions during a viewing.

Key Vocabulary and Phrases

  • het huis bezichtigen – to view the house
  • de kamer – the room
  • de huurprijs – the rental price
  • de locatie – the location
  • het contract – the contract
  • Is het inclusief gas, water en elektriciteit? – Is it including gas, water, and electricity?
  • Hoe groot is de woonkamer? – How large is the living room?
  • Zijn huisdieren toegestaan? – Are pets allowed?

Practical Language Use

You will learn how to express preferences and concerns, such as asking about neighborhood safety, noise levels, or transport options. Example questions include:

  • "Is er een supermarkt dichtbij?" – Is there a supermarket nearby?
  • "Kan ik het meubel graag zien?" – Can I please see the furniture?

Differences Between English and Dutch in This Context

Unlike English, Dutch often uses compound nouns in real estate vocabulary (e.g., huurprijs combines “huur” (rent) and “prijs” (price)). Word order can also differ, especially in questions where the verb often comes first: Is het inclusief gas, water en elektriciteit? is structured differently than the English equivalent.

A useful phrase to remember is "Ik wil het huis graag bezichtigen." which means "I would like to view the house." Notice the polite form graag is often used to make requests sound more courteous, which is common in Dutch.
