Important Language Notes

Unlike English, German nouns are capitalized and have grammatical gender, which affects articles and adjective endings. For example, die Zeitung (feminine), das Magazin (neuter), and der Artikel (masculine). Also, compound nouns are very common, such as Wochenzeitung (weekly newspaper). The verb placement in sentences may differ from English, especially in subordinate clauses.

Some useful phrases that differ from English include:

  • einen Artikel lesen – to read an article (literal translation: “read an article”)
  • eine Anzeige aufgeben – to place an advertisement
  • über etwas berichten – to report on something
