There is a palliative care team on the ward. We help when treatment is not effective and relief from pain and the patient’s comfort are important. We talk about the patient’s wishes, e.g. whether they want to be in a hospice or at home. If the patient has an advance directive, we ask to see it.
The family can ask for support from a psychologist. We respect different religions and customs, including prayer or a farewell conversation. After the death of a loved one, staff will help with formalities and explain how to offer condolences.

Cześć! Tu Ania z biura.
Hi! This is Ania from the office.
I got a message that our colleague Marek’s dad is in a hospice. Marek wrote that this evening you can come by for a short goodbye. I’m a bit stressed because I don’t know what to say. Will you go with me? And should we buy flowers, or is it better to just write condolences?
Useful phrases:
-
Możemy pójść razem o godzinie...
(We can go together at...)
-
Moim zdaniem lepiej...
(In my opinion it’s better to...)
-
Możesz mu napisać: „Bardzo mi przykro...”
(You can write to him: “I’m very sorry...”)
Hi Ania, sure, I’ll go with you. We can meet at 6:30 pm at the entrance and go in together. I think that for a goodbye it’s better to say something short and calm: “I’m very sorry, I’m with you in my thoughts.” A small bouquet of flowers will be fine, without large arrangements. If you prefer, we can also write Marek a short condolence message and ask what he would prefer.
