Student (expat): Show Goedemorgen, ik woon sinds een jaar in Amsterdam en ik wil mijn burgerlijke staat laten aanpassen, want mijn partner en ik wonen nu officieel samen.

(Good morning, I have lived in Amsterdam for a year and I would like to change my civil status, because my partner and I are now officially living together.)

Medewerker gemeente Amsterdam: Show Goedemorgen, dat kan; u staat nu ingeschreven als alleenstaand, dus we moeten uw gegevens en die van uw partner aanpassen in de Basisregistratie Personen.

(Good morning, that can be arranged; you are currently registered as single, so we need to update your details and those of your partner in the Municipal Personal Records Database.)

Student (expat): Show Welke documenten hebben we precies nodig, gaat het om onze huwelijksakte uit het buitenland of is een samenlevingscontract van de notaris ook goed?

(Which documents do we need exactly — is it our marriage certificate from abroad, or is a cohabitation agreement from a notary sufficient?)

Medewerker gemeente Amsterdam: Show Als u niet getrouwd bent, is een samenlevingscontract of partnerverklaring van het notariaat meestal genoeg, maar ik heb ook uw paspoorten en eventueel de geboorteakten nodig.

(If you are not married, a cohabitation agreement or a partner declaration from a notary is usually sufficient, but I will also need your passports and possibly the birth certificates.)

Student (expat): Show En hoe werkt het inschrijven, moeten we samen komen om alles te ondertekenen of kan ik ook met een volmacht van mijn partner komen?

(And how does the registration work — do we both have to come to sign everything, or can I come with a power of attorney from my partner?)

Medewerker gemeente Amsterdam: Show In dit geval moeten jullie allebei persoonlijk komen om te ondertekenen, daarna passen wij uw burgerlijke staat aan naar samenwonend en krijgt u een bevestiging per e‑mail.

(In this case you must both come in person to sign. After that we will change your civil status to cohabiting and you will receive a confirmation by e‑mail.)

Student (expat): Show Oké duidelijk, dan maak ik voor ons allebei een afspraak, want we willen dat alles goed geregistreerd staat voor later, bijvoorbeeld voor voogdij of een testament.

(Okay, clear. I will make an appointment for both of us, because we want everything to be properly registered for later, for example regarding custody or a will.)

Medewerker gemeente Amsterdam: Show Dat is verstandig, bespreek die punten ook met een notaris, zodat uw samenlevingscontract en eventueel testament goed aansluiten bij wat hier bij de gemeente geregistreerd staat.

(That is sensible. Discuss those matters with a notary as well, so your cohabitation agreement and any will align with what is registered here at the municipality.)

Cliënt: Show Meneer de notaris, mijn partner en ik starten een echtscheidingsprocedure en ik wil graag weten welke documenten ik moet meenemen en welke formulieren ik hier moet ondertekenen.

(Mr Notary, my partner and I are starting divorce proceedings and I would like to know which documents I should bring and which forms I must sign here.)

Notaris: Show We beginnen met uw huwelijksakte en, als u die heeft, het bestaande samenlevingscontract of geregistreerd partnerschap, zodat we precies zien welke afspraken er al zijn vastgelegd.

(We will start with your marriage certificate and, if you have one, the existing cohabitation agreement or registered partnership, so we can see exactly what arrangements are already recorded.)

Cliënt: Show We moeten goede afspraken maken over de voogdij van de kinderen en over de woning; komt dat allemaal in één document te staan?

(We need to make clear arrangements about custody of the children and about the home; will all of that be included in a single document?)

Notaris: Show We maken een echtscheidingsconvenant, daarin leggen we de voogdij, de verdeling van de spullen en de afspraken over de woning vast, en u beiden moet dat bij mij ondertekenen.

(We will prepare a divorce settlement. In it we set out the custody arrangements, the division of belongings and the agreements about the home, and you both must sign it with me.)

Cliënt: Show Ik twijfel ook over een naamswijziging, want ik gebruik nu de familienaam van mijn partner; kan ik dat via u regelen of moet ik daarvoor naar de gemeente?

(I'm also unsure about changing my name, because I currently use my partner's family name; can you arrange that or do I need to go to the municipality?)

Notaris: Show Een officiële naamswijziging loopt via de overheid, maar wij kunnen in uw testament en andere aktes wel vastleggen onder welke naam u genoemd wilt worden.

(An official name change is handled by the authorities, but we can record in your will and other deeds under which name you wish to be referred to.)

Cliënt: Show Dan wil ik graag mijn testament aanpassen, zodat duidelijk is wie wat erft als mij iets overkomt, zeker nu onze situatie verandert.

(Then I would like to update my will so it is clear who inherits what if something happens to me, especially now that our situation is changing.)

Notaris: Show Dat is verstandig; we zullen uw testament en eventuele volmachten opnieuw opstellen, zodat alles juridisch klopt bij uw nieuwe burgerlijke staat na de echtscheiding.

(That is sensible. We will redraft your will and any powers of attorney so that everything is legally correct with your new civil status after the divorce.)
