Cultural and Linguistic Notes
In Bulgarian, personality traits are often described using adjectives that agree in gender and number with the noun they modify. Unlike English, you need to pay attention to these grammatical agreements.
Useful phrases and differences:
- Той е много дружелюбен човек. – “He is a very friendly person.” In English, we simply use “friendly,” but in Bulgarian, дружелюбен modifies човек with the masculine form.
- Аз съм търпелив. vs. Аз съм търпелива. – Depending on whether the speaker is male or female, the adjective ending changes.
- Не обичам да говоря лъжата. – “I do not like to tell lies.” Here, the verb говоря (to speak/tell) is used to describe the action connected with personality.
