Important Grammar Points
In Bulgarian, age is expressed with the preposition на plus the number and the plural noun години. Unlike English, where we say "I am 35 years old," Bulgarian speakers literally say "I am at 35 years." You also get acquainted with ordinal numbers to specify birth dates, e.g., "първи януари" for "first of January." The verb съм (to be) is regularly used to describe age in the present tense.
Useful Bulgarian Expressions and English Equivalents
- Аз съм на 30 години. — "I am 30 years old." (Literal: "I am at 30 years.")
- Кога е рожденият ти ден? — "When is your birthday?"
- Рожденият ми ден е на 10 октомври. — "My birthday is on October 10th."
Note that Bulgarian uses ти to show possession, similar to 'your' in English. Also, dates use the ordinal number followed by the month name.
