Before she carries out a major procedure, she explains the treatment agreement to the patient. She provides a written cost estimate so the patient knows: Which treatment is planned? What will the health insurance pay? What co-payment will the patient need to pay?
The practice later submits the bill for the treatment to the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. For this, the team uses the German fee schedule. The dentist records everything carefully in the patient file: diagnosis, treatment and medications. Confidentiality is very important. She only talks with other doctors about the patient if the patient gives permission.
In rare cases she must report a disease to the public health office. This reporting obligation is a legal requirement. This is how the healthcare system works in Germany: The dentist treats the patient, the health insurance covers part of the costs, and the practice prepares the correct billing.
