Day surgery unit – Information note (to read before admission)

For your safety, the preoperative assessment must be completed before the procedure. Please bring your identification, any prescriptions and a list of your current medications. Follow the preoperative fasting instructions given by the anesthetist (do not eat or drink anything, unless advised otherwise). On the morning of the procedure, take a shower and carry out the requested skin preparation (antiseptic soap; do not use creams or makeup). Remove jewelry and nail polish. On arrival, the team will follow a preoperative checklist and verify that there are no known allergies.

During the procedure, conscious sedation may be offered to reduce anxiety, or general anesthesia may be used depending on the intervention. Palliative sedation is not used in surgery: it is an end-of-life measure intended to relieve refractory suffering. After the operation, postoperative monitoring and pain management are routine. Before you return home, the nurse will explain the discharge protocol and the warning signs that should prompt you to contact the department. Arrange for a family member or friend to accompany you: you will not be able to drive. If necessary, transportation by ambulance can be arranged.
