Exercise 1: Writing correspondence
Instruction: Write a reply to the following message appropriate to the situation
E-mail: You receive an email from your team leader about an issue with the care file and a patient's privacy; respond and give your professional opinion and proposal.
Beste collega,
Gisteren heeft de dochter van meneer De Vries gevraagd om in het zorgdossier van haar vader te kijken. Meneer lag toen te slapen en we konden hem geen toestemming vragen. De dochter was boos, omdat ze vindt dat ze als familie recht heeft op alle informatie.
Ik wil graag weten hoe jij hiermee omgaat. Wat vind jij belangrijker in zo’n situatie: patiëntveiligheid en privacy, of de wens van de familie? En hoe leg jij dit op een rustige en respectvolle manier uit aan de familie?
Wil je mij je reactie mailen? Dan bespreken we het in het volgende teamoverleg.

Dear colleague,
Yesterday the daughter of Mr. De Vries asked to look at her father's care record. Mr. De Vries was asleep at the time, so we could not ask him for consent. The daughter was upset because she believes that, as family, she has the right to all information.
I would like to know how you would handle this. What do you consider more important in a situation like this: patient safety and privacy, or the family's wishes? And how would you explain this calmly and respectfully to the family?

Dank voor je e-mail. Naar mijn mening zijn de privacy en de autonomie van de patiënt altijd het belangrijkste. Als meneer De Vries geen toestemming heeft gegeven, vind ik dat we de dochter niet zomaar in het zorgdossier kunnen laten kijken.
Ik zou tegen de dochter rustig uitleggen dat we gebonden zijn aan het medisch beroepsgeheim en dat we haar vader eerst zelf willen vragen wat hij wel en niet wil delen. Ik zou haar aanbod doen om samen met haar vader een gesprek te plannen. Zo respecteren we zijn privacy, maar luisteren we ook naar de zorgen van de familie.

Dear Sanne,
Thank you for your e-mail. In my view the patient's privacy and autonomy should always come first. If Mr. De Vries has not given consent, we should not allow the daughter to access the care record without permission.
I would calmly explain to the daughter that we are bound by medical confidentiality and that we need to ask her father what he wants to share. I would offer to arrange a meeting with both of them so we can discuss her concerns together. This way we respect his privacy while also addressing the family's worries.
