Ik ben Mariela en ik werk sinds één jaar in een ziekenhuis in Utrecht. In mijn land was ik arts, maar in Nederland werk ik nu als verpleegkundige in opleiding. Ik heb al een uit mijn land en ik doe hier een extra . Twee dagen per week heb ik les, de andere dagen werk ik op de interne geneeskunde.

My name is Mariela and I have been working for one year in a hospital in Utrecht. In my home country I was a doctor, but in the Netherlands I now work as a nurse in training. I already have a diploma from my country and I am doing additional training here. Two days a week I have classes; on the other days I work on the internal medicine ward.

My ward is on the fourth floor. We use a buddy system there: a designated colleague helps me with difficult situations. Together we do the handover and then make the rounds. I check the IV and the monitor for the patients and I help people in and out of bed or into their wheelchair. In the cupboard next to the desk is my work uniform. I also wear safety shoes, a face mask and gloves. During my shift I must always follow the hygiene rules. If there is an incident, I must report it immediately in the computer system and call my buddy. At the end of the day I walk past all the rooms one more time to make sure the patients are settled.

Welcome to our hospital and congratulations on your nursing degree. From next week you will be working on the Internal Medicine ward. In the future you may be able to pursue a specialization, for example in the emergency department or in the operating theatre.

During the first week you will shadow an experienced colleague. You will get to know the ward: the waiting area, the reception desk, the beds, the wheelchairs and the stretchers. You will also practice with the monitor, the IV stand and the radiology department.

Your work schedule for the first week:
